Special Announcement – COVID-19 and Camp Seale Harris Updated 5/27/2020

Camp Seale Harris is not just one place on a map, or one week a year. It’s a community, a family, that knows life with Type 1 diabetes. With the current changes to life as we know it due to the COVID19 pandemic, the Camp Seale Harris community is here for children with T1D and their families.
We are all doing a new and hard thing right now. This moment in time is testing our flexibility and patience, as we know it is testing yours as well.
Camp Seale Harris has made the very difficult decision to not hold any in-person diabetes camps in Summer 2020 including: Senior Week, Junior Week, Dothan Day Camp, Huntsville Day Camp, Tuscaloosa Day Camp, Birmingham Day Camp, Mobile Day Camp, and Coastal Camp Seale Harris. We are heartbroken, and we know many of our campers will be to hear this news. We know how important Camp Seale Harris is to you, your children, and your families.
Our greatest hope was that we would be able to safely have Camp Seale Harris at all our original locations this summer. We waited as long as possible to make this final decision to hear guidance and requirements from health officials, the American Camp Association, the CDC, our camp site owners, and most importantly discussions regarding risk and safety with our camp medical team. Keeping every child, teen, and camp staff safe … while also keeping camp the encouraging and empowering place that it is meant to be was the deciding factor. Camp group activity will be back soon, hopefully by October. We are not permanently closing, and look forward to seeing campers again.
So, what now? We are ready to provide the support and community of Camp Seale Harris to children and teens, even if it has to be in a different way. We believe now more than ever the connection to other T1D friends is so important.
All campers are invited to register for a new and fully scholarshipped online Camp Seale Harris At Home Edition happening via online scheduled meet-ups and activities using Zoom from any computer or mobile device. Each camper will receive a Camp Stuff box in the mail including: schedule, activities supplies, camp t-shirt, nametag, and instructions.
Sessions will not be all “screen time,” but will be a fun blend of live, posted, and interactive outdoor activities that campers can do with very little assistance. Register here.
The best part of camp is the community of T1D friends, and that’s the best reason to participate in Camp Seale Harris At Home Edition! Campers will see old friends and new in large Zoom groups, as well as have small group Cabin breakouts for fun, hanging out, counselor-led chats, and ongoing connection to same age T1D friends.
If you paid for an in-person camp session this summer, you have the option of:
- Donating all or a portion of your payment to Camp Seale Harris to assist with costs of online camp, and future Camp Seale Harris sessions
- Applying your payment to a future camp for your camper
- A full or partial refund
While this is a very challenging time for Camp Seale Harris financially, we know it is for many camper families as well. There will be no fee charged for the “At Home Edition” online sessions. Every family will receive a full scholarship for the cost.
